History:
The first annual Put
the Brakes on Fatalities Day was held on October 10, 2001.
Its goal is to deliver messages to the public about the major causes
of transportation fatalities - chiefly highway fatalities - and
their avoidance, in an upbeat fashion. The event is commemorated
with state and local events across the country.
Summary:
Northern Kentucky Highway Safety Initiative wanted to sponsor an
activity that brought awareness to Highway Safety. The
committee's focus was on seatbelt usage and driving while
intoxicated /impaired.
Drive
Smart Kentucky brought their rollover simulator to graphically
illustrate the effectiveness of wearing seatbelts. State
Trooper Tom Lilley conducted the Rollover Simulator activity.
He talked to students about increased physical injury that results
from not wearing seatbelts.
Another
major focus beside seat belt usage was drinking and driving.
Bob Douglas (Kentucky Crime prevention) lent us the "Fatal Vision
Goggles". The goggles simulate different levels of
intoxication. Officer Lilley told stories of accidents where
alcohol and drugs were involved. He also conducted various
field sobriety tests with the NKU students. The students were
very responsive and participated in all the activities.
Thanks to all those that worked to put the event on and to all that
participated.
